In a recent exclusive interview with the Daily Caller, Senator Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, expressed his strong disapproval of the stance taken by Truth in Education Funding, a network backed by the National Education Association (NEA), the largest teachers union in the country.
The network had announced its intention to launch an anti-school choice campaign on January 22, coinciding with National School Choice Week.
Senator Scott found it deeply offensive that the organizations, which he believes are hindering the progress of underprivileged and low-income students, are shifting the blame onto schools that offer these students a chance to realize their American dream. "Its absolutely offensive that the very organizations holding back poor and low-income kids are now deflecting blame on the schools that provide them the opportunity to live out their American dream," Scott told the Caller.
Scott further criticized teachers' unions and labor bosses for denying numerous minority students access to their schools. He accused them of exploiting race to further their anti-school choice agenda and to deny these students a brighter future. "In fact, its teachers unions and big labor bosses that shut countless minority students out of their schools. Now, theyre weaponizing race to lock them out of a brighter future and forward their anti-school choice agenda," Scott added.
Scott, along with Republican Senator James Lankford from Oklahoma and Republican Representative Virginia Foxx from North Carolina, introduced legislation on January 10 affirming parents' fundamental right to guide the upbringing of their children. The Daily Caller was the first to obtain a copy of this legislation, titled "The Families Rights and Responsibilities Act." The Act aims to prevent federal government interference in parental rights without first passing a strict scrutiny test. It also allows parents to use any violation of this right in judicial or administrative proceedings, either at the federal or state level.
Senator Scott currently serves as the Co-chair of the Congressional School Choice Caucus, a position that underscores his commitment to the cause of school choice. His recent remarks reflect his ongoing dedication to ensuring that all students, regardless of their socio-economic background, have access to quality education and the opportunity to succeed.
