Iowa House Republicans have begun questioning some public colleges based on the money they spend on diversity-style programs.
In many cases, these Iowa Republicans feel that some of the colleges in their state may be misspending monies allocated to them by the state government when they apply directly to diversity programs. The House Republicans are not sure those diversity programs are genuinely what they claim to be. Some wonder if those programs are primarily a vehicle for promoting a left-wing agenda.
Breitbart reports that the presidents of Iowa State, the University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa spoke with Iowas House Education Appropriations subcommittee to request budgetary increases for their universities this year. Instead of simply handing over those extra funds, the Iowa State House has begun to ask the universities to prove that they genuinely require the funds that they are requesting.
Rep. Taylor Collins, R-Mediapolis, spoke with the presidents of those universities and asked them how much they are paying the top administrators of their institutions diversity, equity, and inclusion. The answer came back at an average of approximately $75,000 spent across the three universities.
Collins stated: I just have a hard time when I see a $32 million request and I find $750,000 for four people.
The President of Iowa State University, Wendy Wintersteen, responded in response to the line of questioning: we are seeing an increasingly diverse population at each of our institutions.
Rep. Carter Nordman, R-Adel, took another approach: We are interested in looking at every aspect of taxpayer dollars being spent at our regent universities. Everything, He then added: What they spend on programs, DEI, other administrative costs. We are interested not only in how much we appropriate, but how those appropriated dollars are being spent at our regents.
Republican leaders in other states have also begun to look into the cost of such diversity programs in the universities that operate within their borders. They are all trying to zero in on the costs of such programs across the board. They want to know why they are continuing to allocate money to college programs that are not necessarily doing anything other than promoting a specific political point of view. That doesnt seem wise or fair to many Republicans throughout the country. They want to put an end to some of this nonsense right away.
