Biden Campaign Takes On Corporate Media: Off-The-Record Meetings Challenge News Coverage Of Presidential Race

President Joe Biden's re-election team is reportedly engaging in private discussions with corporate media journalists and editors, expressing their dissatisfaction with the current news coverage of the presidential race, as reported by Semafor on Monday.

The campaign team has reportedly compiled a spreadsheet detailing instances where they believe corporate media outlets have inadequately reported on the campaign trail. According to Semafor, the campaign officials have shown particular frustration over the corporate media's extensive coverage of former President Donald Trump. They argue that the media's focus is disproportionately on his criminal indictments, overshadowing his alleged inflammatory remarks.

Semafor also reported that the campaign's meeting with The New York Times (NYT) did not proceed smoothly for unspecified reasons. However, the discussions with other outlets such as The Washington Post were described as "substantive" and "productive."

The campaign officials have planned meetings with political journalists and editors from ABC News, NPR, Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and Reuters at their campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. High-ranking officials, including the campaign manager and deputies, have reportedly been in conversation with these reporting teams.

The Biden re-election campaign is reportedly banking on the media's coverage of Trump to boost Biden's standing in the polls. The campaign believes that increased coverage of Trump could potentially garner more support for the 2024 presidential election. This belief stems from the observation that some voters who were inclined towards Trump but voted for Biden in 2020 have not been closely following the former president.

Ammar Moussa, a Biden campaign spokesman, told the NYT in November, "The more the American people are confronted with who Donald Trump is a dangerous, extreme and erratic man who only cares about using the power of the government to help himself and his friends the more they reject him. We will continue to highlight for voters whats at stake if Trump and his cronies are allowed anywhere near the Oval Office.

The Biden campaign has urged media outlets to emulate the NYT's coverage of Trump, especially regarding his stance on immigration, as reported by the Times. The campaign has also reportedly requested the media to cover Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in a negative light.
