In a recent press conference, Florida's Republican Governor, Ron DeSantis, revealed that the state is contemplating the removal of President Joe Biden from its primary ballot, as reported by the Washington Examiner.
This consideration comes in the wake of Maine's Secretary of State's decision to exclude former President Donald Trump from the state's ballot due to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots.
DeSantis expressed his concern over the precedent set by Maine's decision, stating, "To have one election official decide that somebody is guilty of, quote, 'insurrection,' when there has not been a criminal conviction of anybody, much less the candidate himself, that opens up Pandora's box." The Governor voiced these concerns during a press briefing in Cumming, Iowa.
Despite his opposition to "tit-for-tat" political responses, DeSantis expressed his disapproval of the removal of Trump from the primary ballots in Colorado and Maine, as reported by the Washington Examiner. He emphasized the need for reciprocity in the application of rules, stating, "Whatever the rules are applied to us, we're going to fight back and apply the rules the other way." He also expressed his belief that the U.S. Supreme Court would need to intervene in the matter.
CNN analyst S.E. Cupp commented on the current state of the Republican Party, stating, "The whole of the Republican Party right now is animated by a politics of revenge The punitiveness, the punishment, the retribution is what is leading so much of Republican policy and rhetoric."
In a similar vein, Missouri's Secretary of State, Jay Ashcroft, announced that his state is also considering the removal of Biden from the ballot, as reported by NBC NEWS.
Ashcroft expressed his disapproval of the actions taken in Colorado and Maine on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "What has happened in Colorado & Maine is disgraceful & undermines our republic." He further warned that if Democratic states continue to remove Trump from their ballots, Republican states would likely respond in kind, a move he deemed detrimental.
