Republicans Begin Impeachment Proceedings Targeting Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas

The Republican party is set to initiate impeachment proceedings against Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security under the Biden administration, as the new year commences.

This decision comes in the wake of Mayorkas' management of the ongoing crisis at the southern border.

The House Committee on Homeland Security, as reported by CNN, has resolved to commence impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas, who they perceive as a radical figure within the Biden administration. The committee's spokesperson issued a statement to CNN, stating, "The House Committee on Homeland Security has conducted a comprehensive investigation into Secretary Mayorkas handling of, and role in, the unprecedented crisis at the Southwest border for nearly a year."

The spokesperson further added, "Following the bipartisan vote in the House to refer articles of impeachment against the secretary to our Committee, we will be conducting hearings and taking up those articles in the coming weeks."

This development follows the revelation by border officials that an unprecedented 302,000 individuals illegally crossed the border in December, marking the highest monthly total in American history, as noted by The Mail.

The Daily Mail has reported that the first impeachment hearing for Mayorkas is scheduled for the following week, although circumstances may alter this timeline.

In response to the crisis, Mayorkas appeared on MSNBC, attributing the surge in illegal crossings to climate change, rather than accepting responsibility for the situation at the border.

In a CNN interview, DHS spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg criticized the GOP's decision to proceed with Mayorkas' impeachment, stating, "There is no valid basis to impeach Secretary Mayorkas, as senior members of the House majority have attested, and this extreme impeachment push is a harmful distraction from our critical national security priorities." She further affirmed that Secretary Mayorkas and the Department of Homeland Security would continue their efforts to ensure the safety of Americans.

It is worth noting that in November, eight House Republicans voted against Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greenes Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas, effectively halting the impeachment process at that time. The success of this second attempt remains uncertain.
