Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows fell victim to a swatting incident on Friday night at her residence.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, the police revealed that a man had called, falsely claiming to have broken into the Bellows home. Fortunately, Bellows and her family were not present at the time.
This incident follows Bellows' unilateral decision to remove Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot, citing his alleged involvement in the insurrection against the US government during his presidency as disqualifying. It is important to note that Trump has not been charged with the crime of insurrection in any of the four criminal cases against him.
In response to Bellows' disqualification of Trump, some officials in Maine have called for her impeachment. They argue that her decision lacks legal basis and undermines the democratic process.
Bellows is just one of several politicians and pundits who have been targeted by swatting incidents this week. The list includes Jack Posobiec, Jonathan Turley, Senator Rick Scott, Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Brandon Willis, Greene's daughters, the Delaware computer repair shop owner involved in Hunter Biden's laptop controversy, Georgia State Senators John Albers, Kim Jackson, Kay Kirkpatrick, Clint Dixon, Georgia Lt. Governor Burt Jones, and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. In each case, the police were called to their homes based on fabricated reports of violence.
In response to the swatting incident, Bellows took to Facebook to express her frustration, stating, "This behavior is unacceptable. The non-stop threatening communications that my staff endured yesterday is unacceptable." She acknowledged that those who disagreed with her decision had resorted to vitriolic tactics in an attempt to intimidate her and her team. Bellows further characterized the incident as an effort to "dehumanize" her.
Bellows has received praise from MSNBC for her "bravery" and has been featured on CNN for her actions in denying due process to the former president and current Republican frontrunner in her charge of insurrection against him. However, her decision continues to face criticism for its lack of legal grounding and potential infringement on Trump's rights.
