Maine Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, who is currently advocating for the exclusion of former President Trump from the 2024 ballot, is known to have participated in the controversial anti-Trump 'Women's March' in 2017.
The march was marked by several speakers who used violent rhetoric, including pop icon Madonna, who openly admitted to contemplating 'blowing up' the White House.
The Women's March organization, however, soon fell apart due to multiple allegations of anti-Semitism. Given Bellows' active participation in the march, her recent efforts to remove Trump from the ballot seem to align with her previous anti-Trump stance.
In 2017, Maine Public reported on a massive rally in support of women's rights that took place across Maine, a day after Trump's presidential inauguration. The rally saw thousands of men and women gather to voice their concerns, show solidarity, and pledge their support for women's and immigrants' rights, the LGBT community, and the environment. The crowd at the State House in Augusta was so large that Capitol Security was unable to estimate its size.
Among the speakers was Democratic state Sen. Shenna Bellows of Manchester, the former director of the ACLU of Maine. Bellows acknowledged the fear people had about the future under the new administration. However, she encouraged them to remember that they were not alone, and emphasized the importance of staying engaged and the power of unity.
"When you look back at our nation's history of civil rights it's one of both tragic loss and setbacks and forward action of people," Bellows said. "And we are a more just and equal society than we were at our nation's founding or even 50 years ago. And so I have confidence that good people coming together and persevering will prevail."
Despite Democrats' claims of upholding 'our democracy,' their actions, such as Bellows' attempt to bar Trump from the 2024 ballot, have raised questions about their commitment to democratic principles. Critics argue that such actions pose a greater threat to democracy than any other.
