A female officer from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles, alleging sexual harassment and whistleblower retaliation.
The lawsuit comes a year after her husband, also an LAPD officer, reportedly shared explicit photos and videos of her with colleagues. The city's police department is also accused of failing to prevent sexual harassment and retaliation, as stated in the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
The officer's husband, Brady Lamas, is currently facing trial on six counts of disorderly conduct for distributing "sexually explicit photographs and sexually explicit videos" of his wife to fellow LAPD officers without her consent, as per a criminal complaint filed in December. The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, is seeking unspecified damages.
According to a December 2022 release from the LA County District Attorneys Office, Lamas allegedly disseminated the explicit content via a group chat on the messaging app Kik between December 29, 2021, and January 24, 2022. The officer claims that she was subjected to sexual harassment from other department officers for over a year due to her husband's actions, as reported by The Los Angeles Times.
The officer was initially perplexed when male LAPD employees began making comments such as "Brady is a lucky man" and "He doesn't know how good he has it," according to a restraining order application against Lamas. She was unaware at the time that these men had seen the explicit images. The officer discovered the images on January 30, describing her husband as a "predator" who "preyed on" her.
The lawsuit alleges that the LAPD failed to ensure that the images would cease to be shared among the officers who had obtained them. On January 31, 2022, a day after his wife discovered the photos, Lamas was reassigned to home work pending an internal investigation.
The department stated that it is fully cooperating with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department and the District Attorneys Office and expressed concern over the officer's alleged off-duty conduct, which it said does not reflect the values of the LAPD.
