In A Race Against Time, White House Plans Final Ukraine Military Aid Package Of The Year

The White House has announced plans to release an additional package of military aid for Ukraine before the year concludes, cautioning that it could be the last unless Congress approves further assistance.

John Kirby, a spokesperson for national security issues at the White House, informed the media of an impending announcement of aid, though he refrained from disclosing the exact amount or the contents of the package.

Kirby stated, "When that is done, well have no more replenishment authority available to us." He emphasized the ongoing need for American support in Ukraine, urging Congress to take action. "Ukraine still needs our help, and its well past time for Congress to act and stand up for freedom and democracy and our own national security interests, which are very much at play," he said.

Earlier this month, the White House cautioned that without additional funding from Congress, the U.S. would exhaust its resources to provide military aid to Ukraine by the end of the year. In late October, an emergency funding request of approximately $100 billion was sent to Congress by the White House. This request sought additional funds for border security, allies in the Indo-Pacific, and for Israel and Ukraine in their respective conflicts against Hamas and Russia.

Of the total request, around $61 billion was allocated for Ukraine, which included $30 billion for equipment from the Department of Defense stocks and to replenish those stocks. The House, controlled by Republicans, has stipulated that funding for Ukraine must be coupled with an immigration deal. Recent days have seen lawmakers engaged in negotiations to reach an agreement, with President Biden expressing his willingness to compromise on border policy to secure aid for Ukraine.
