In a recent development, a senior Republican member of the House has leveled accusations against special counsel David Weiss, suggesting that Weiss's indictment of Hunter Biden is a strategic move to shield him from a comprehensive investigation being conducted by the House into the Biden family.
The chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), who is spearheading the congressional inquiry into Hunter Biden and President Biden, expressed his belief that Weiss is only pressing the least severe charges possible to protect the father-son duo from potentially more damaging disclosures that could emerge from his committee.
Comer revealed on CNN Friday, "We think that this is just the tip of the iceberg. We think there are many more crimes." He further voiced his concern that Weiss's indictment of Hunter Biden could be a tactic to prevent him from being deposed in the House Oversight Committee.
However, CNN anchor Jake Tapper appeared dubious of Comer's claims, responding with a hint of sarcasm, "Yes. He indicted him to protect him. Yes. The classic rubric. He indicted him to protect him. I got it. Hes facing like 17 additional years in prison."
Comer retorted, "Jake, this whole things been about a cover-up You indicted him on the least little thing, the gun charge, and not paying taxes. Anybody else in America would already be in prison. You say he owes $2 million. He may owe $7 or $8 million, if these loans are fraudulent loans. I mean, a loan means you are going to pay it back.
On the other hand, Hunter Biden's team seemed displeased with Weiss's decision. They pointed out that Weiss was prepared to let Biden off with misdemeanor charges just a few months ago.
Abbe Lowell, Hunter Bidens attorney, stated that the new charges were brought only in response to "Republican pressure." He said, "Now, after five years of investigating with no new evidence and two years after Hunter paid his taxes in full the U.S. Attorney has piled on nine new charges when he had agreed just months ago to resolve this matter with a pair of misdemeanors."
