The embattled Congressman George Santos says that he is currently weighing his options when it comes to running for re-election in 2024.
Raw Story reports that he is expected to come to a decision soon. This could be a nightmare scenario for the Republican Party because he is under investigation for many ethics probes. Therefore, it could be very challenging for Santos to win the election. However, it might be challenging for the national party to oppose Santos if he is the incumbent Republican running for re-election in a problematic seat.
In the past, Santos indicated that he would only serve one term in Congress. However, sources on CNN state that he appears to have potentially had a change of heart. He might be ready to try to serve another term. Even though polling shows that most of Santos constituents believe he should resign.
Raw Story reports that GOP allies are concerned that, even if faced with criminal charges, Santos might not be deterred from running for re-election.
This has spurred New York Republicans to look for potential primary challengers for Santos. They want to be prepared in case he does decide to go through with running for re-election. They hope that this is something that they dont have to worry about at all, but they are willing to take the steps necessary to get any other Republican placed in contention for the seat.
Freshman Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-NY) insisted the following: George Santos will not be on any ticket in 2024.
Freshman Rep. Anthony DEsposito (R-NY) also said: I am confident that George Santos will not be on any ticket come 2024.
This makes it clear that there are many New York Republicans that are trying to turn the page and move on from George Santos. This is hardly surprising, given the number of ethics issues and other issues he has had over the years. Therefore, they may finally be ready to take a stand against Santos and get him to step down from the position that he is in right now.
It is essential to keep an eye on how this all plays out. The seat will be a challenging one in future elections no matter what, but many Republicans believe that it will be even more complicated if Santos is the candidate that they must put forward.
