In a recent development, Democratic Representative Robert Garcia of California has proposed a resolution to expel his Republican counterpart, Representative George Santos, who is currently under indictment.
This marks the third occasion on which Santos has been subjected to a vote for expulsion.
Earlier this month, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted against a resolution aimed at expelling Santos. However, following this, the House Ethics Committee released a damning report on Santos, in a renewed attempt to secure his expulsion. It should be noted that for Santos to be expelled from Congress, a two-thirds majority vote in the full House is required.
Garcia has publicly called on House Speaker Mike Johnson to express his support for the expulsion. "Were calling on Mike Johnson, the speaker, to come out and tell his members that hes going to support the expulsion, Garcia stated.
In a conversation with Santos on Tuesday, Speaker Johnson suggested that resignation could be an alternative to facing a vote on expulsion. According to PunchBowl News, House Republicans may postpone their request for a vote on Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guests resolution to expel Santos until Thursday.
In response to these developments, Santos launched a scathing attack on the political establishment in Washington, accusing them of neglecting the country's issues while pursuing him. If this city put the effort into fixing our country the same way they put on expelling me, wed be in a better place!
In a fiery tirade on X Spaces on Friday night, Santos predicted his expulsion from Congress following the report from the House Ethics Committee. I know Im going to get expelled when this expulsion resolution goes to the floor, Santos said on Friday on X Spaces. Ive done the math over and over, and it doesnt look really good.
Santos also criticized his fellow lawmakers, accusing them of prioritizing personal indulgences over their legislative duties. I have colleagues who are more worried about getting drunk every night with the next lobbyist that theyre gonna screw and pretend like none of us know whats going on, and sell off the American people, not show up to vote because theyre too hungover or whatever the reason is, or not show up to vote at all and just give their card out like fking candy for someone else to vote for them, Santos said.
Earlier this month, the House Ethics Committee released a report on their investigation into Santos, a freshman representative from New York. The Republican-led committee found that Santos had "violated criminal laws" and had "sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit. He blatantly stole from his campaign. He deceived donors into providing what they thought were contributions to his campaign but were in fact payments for his personal benefit.
In an interview with Semafor, Santos revealed that he would not be seeking reelection. Despite the House's earlier rejection of a resolution to expel Santos, the House Ethics Committee released a damning report on the lawmaker in a renewed effort to secure his expulsion.
