The recent suicide death of F.L. "Bubba" Copeland, the mayor of Smiths Station, Alabama, has brought to light a complex and troubling story.
Copeland, who was also a pastor, took his own life after his secret life as an online crossdresser was exposed.
The left-wing press has portrayed Copeland's death as a result of bigotry towards the LGBTQ community and has used it as an opportunity to attack the right. The conservative news site, the 1819 Project, was the first to expose the mayor's "hobby."
However, after Copeland's death, it was revealed that his fetish went beyond crossdressing. Several women have come forward with more salacious and disturbing details about their experiences with Copeland.
Multiple women have disclosed that they were victimized by the now-deceased mayor after discovering that he had shared their names and photos on pornography sites without their consent. Copeland took his own life shortly after the 1819 Project released a damning expose that unraveled the sick details of his secret double-life as a "transgender" individual, which included writing erotic fantasies about murdering a local woman.
Despite evidence of predatory behavior, major media outlets have portrayed Copeland's suicide sympathetically, resulting in an outpouring of support. A makeshift memorial dedicated to the former mayor and pastor was set up outside the First Baptist Church in Phenix, Alabama, causing the women targeted by his perverse behavior to grapple with a mix of emotions.
Some of the women have shared their experiences with local reporters, shedding light on how Copeland used their names and images to victimize them.
Ansley Summerlin expressed shock upon discovering that her name and photos had been posted online without her permission. She received photos of herself posted on multiple porn sites along with pictures of another woman named Brittini. Summerlin stated, "He proceeded to use my first and middle name on these sites, and I believe there are about nine sites now that I have about 5 or 6 photos of my face and my name across the internet."
An employee of a local hair salon in Smiths Station, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that her name was used without her knowledge in an online story she believes was written by Copeland. The story described her appearance and intensified it, portraying her as a porn star in graphic detail. She said, "It said my first and last name, and it was basically describing the way that I look, and then, intensified, I guess, as a porn star, and it went into very graphic detail. I didn't get past the first page because I honestly couldn't stomach it."
Before his death, Copeland responded to the cross-dressing allegations by claiming it was a stress-relieving hobby he engaged in with his wife. He stated, "It's a hobby I do to relieve stress. I have a lot of stress, and I'm not medically transitioning. It's just a bit of a character I'm playing... I don't go out and seek solicitation or anything like that. It's something that I don't intermingle with the other. It's private. I don't do it in the public or anything like that... It's just a fictional character I made up to relieve stress."
However, Copeland's activities extended beyond sharing photos of local women on pornography sites. According to Reduxx, he also posted transgender fetish content and graphic sexual narratives on social media. His Tumblr account featured themes related to feminization, and he wrote several erotic stories, one of which involved him fantasizing about murdering a woman to assume her identity.
In his narration, Copeland described undergoing dramatic plastic surgery to transform into the woman he was stalking. He wrote, "I wonder does she take a shower or a bath? Do her panties and bra match all the time? These are the thoughts that plague my mind. Being a relatively good hacker, I had to figure out a way to install Spyware on her devices."
He then pursued the woman on a cruise ship, engaging in a violent struggle before pushing her over the rail. Before murdering her, Copeland's character stole the victim's wedding ring set. He wrote, "Grabbing her by her left hand, I had to get one last piece of her to complete my plan. Doing her best to fight me, I had to get her wedding set! Those two rings had become the object of my desire... No one heard a thing. As the real [victim's name redacted] hit the water, Lost forever!"
The former mayor also advocated for the use of hormones and surgical treatments for men who desired to become a "whore." He extended this advocacy to children as well.
Copeland's Tumblr blog featured photos and shared images with a theme of young boys being transitioned into girls, commonly referred to as "sissification" online. These images, accompanied by eroticized text describing the transformation from male to female, are known as "sissy captions." Copeland participated in a Reddit forum on this theme, and while the images, which sometimes included photos of actual minors, were non-sexual in appearance, they were shared through "erotica" accounts.
This bizarre story raises several questions. While it does not appear that Copeland acted out his fantasies or beliefs, it is unclear how he managed to get away with taking women's images and sharing them on pornography sites. It is also unclear whether the women were aware of his actions while he was alive or if they only discovered them after his death. If he were still alive, legal action against him may have been possible.
