In a recent address to her supporters, Nikki Haley, the GOP presidential candidate, underscored the need for a merit-based immigration reform.
She emphasized the importance of aligning immigration with the needs of various industries, thereby bolstering the economy.
Haley, in a video from the November 2 event, criticized the quota-based approach to immigration that has been adopted by both Republican and Democrat presidents.
"For too long, Republican and Democrat presidents dealt with immigration based on a quota, she stated. Haley further elaborated, "Well take X number this year, well take X number next year, the debate is on the number. Its the wrong way to look at it. We need to do it based on merit."
The GOP candidate proposed a shift in focus towards industry needs. "We need to go to our industries and say 'What do you need that you dont have?'" Haley suggested. She emphasized the need for talent in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and technology. "Then you bring people in that can fill those needs. That way youre actually emboldening in your economy," she added.
Haley concluded her speech by emphasizing the importance of legal immigration in shaping America. "Yes, the fabric of America is legal immigration. But lets get the right ones in that are gonna make America better," she said.
However, Haley's proposal has been met with criticism. Jay Palmer, an immigration law advisor to CEOs and migrants, told Breitbart that Haley's proposal equates to "legalizing human labor trafficking for businesses. He warned, "The migrants will come over here, they will be abused, and they will work for any wages because the economy in the United States is better than in their country.
In the fiscal year 2023, the Department of Homeland Security reported apprehending over 2 million illegal immigrants attempting to enter the United States. During her speech, Haley proposed deporting those who arrived after the Biden administration took office, with exceptions for those who are employed.
"If theyre feeding off the system, you send them back," she stated. "If theyre actually trying to be productive and have a job and have a record that we can look at, then we can look at what happens."
Jon Feere, Director of investigations at the Center for Immigration Studies, criticized Haley's stance, telling Breitbart, "Thats a very strong suggestion that she has little interest about removing people who dont belong here."
As the influx of illegal immigrants continues to surge, cities like New York are struggling to accommodate the increasing numbers. The city has resorted to distributing flyers at the border, warning illegal immigrants of the lack of work opportunities and advising them to seek other destinations.
