An NHL player stood firm on his beliefs, and now his jersey is selling like hotcakes.
The Post Millennial reported that Outkick said Ivan Provorovs number 9 jersey was almost completely sold out on the Fanatics and NHL fan shop websites as of Thursday.
According to the Daily Wire, the Philadelphia Flyers planned to do their warm-up Tuesday in jerseys that promoted a Pride Night event sponsored by the organization. Provorov was criticized for not showing up to support the LGBTQ event, citing religious reasons.
The Philadelphia Flyer defenceman is a member of the Russian Orthodox Church, and he defended his decision, saying, I respect everybodys choices. My choice is to stay true to my religion; thats all Im gonna say.
Of course, mainstream media members could not wait to attack him. Breakfast Televisions Sid Seixeiro said, Nothing scares me more than any human being that says, Im not doing this because of my religious beliefs. He continued, When you look at peoples lives who normally say that publicly, youd throw up at what you saw.
According to the Post Millennial, Seixeiro suggested Provorovs team be fined $1 million for his actions.
The Flyers issued a statement following the game: The Philadelphia Flyers organization is committed to inclusivity and is proud to support the LGBTQ+ community. Many of our players actively support local LGBTQ+ organizations, and we were proud to host our annual Pride Night again this year. The Flyers will continue to advocate for inclusivity and the LGBTQ+ community strongly.
Coach John Tortorella backed up his player, Thats one thing I always respect about Provy; hes always true to himself.
The Daily Wire reported Tortorella also said, I think the organization has sent out a release regarding the organization, the beliefs that we have and how we feel about [Pride Night] and, really, a great night.
Tortorella continued, Why would I bench him? Because of a decision, hes making on his beliefs and religion? I think it was a great night to celebrate. The organization has put out a statement. Im not going to get too deep into the conversation. Those are the comments as far as Provy. We talked as a team and with Provy, and thats where were at.
Philadelphia Flyers fans not only did not criticize but showed their support for Provy in virtually buying up nearly every jersey available in just a few days.
