In a recent development, the White House has responded to the House Oversight Committee's subpoenas issued to two members of President Joe Biden's family.
The committee, on Wednesday, issued three subpoenas to Hunter Biden, the President's son, James Biden, his brother, and Rob Walker, a business associate of the Biden family.
During an afternoon news briefing, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was questioned about the subpoenas by the Washington Examiner. Jean-Pierre responded, "I don't have this information in front of me. I'm just hearing it from you," and suggested the reporter refer to the personal representatives for further information.
However, Jean-Pierre proceeded to critique the committee's investigation, stating, "This is an investigation that has been going on for a year now and has turned up zero evidence of wrongdoing by the President because there is none." She further accused the Republicans of persisting with a "baseless smear campaign against the President and his family instead of being focused on the American people's needs."
The recent subpoenas are among the most significant that House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has issued during his tenure. They are intended for depositions related to the House GOP's impeachment inquiry. The investigation led by Comer primarily focuses on the overseas business dealings of Biden and his family, with Hunter and James Biden being central figures.
Biden administration officials, while denying any evidence of wrongdoing, have labeled the investigations as mere distractions. Jean-Pierre stated, "There are a lot of important issues that we need to deal with, not just here in the White House but also in Congress," citing national security, the economy, healthcare, and gun violence as areas of focus. She accused the opposition of attempting to tarnish the President and his family's reputation.
The committee has also sought transcribed interviews with several other Biden family members, including James Bidens wife, Sara Biden, Hallie Biden and her sister Elizabeth Secundy, Hunter Bidens wife Melissa Cohen, and former Biden family business associate Tony Bobulinski.
When asked whether the Biden relatives and Walker should comply with the subpoena, Jean-Pierre did not respond before exiting the podium.
