Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, announced on Saturday her intention to reintroduce a resolution to censure her colleague, Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat from Michigan.
This move comes in response to Tlaib's comments on the conflict in Gaza. Greene's previous attempt to censure Tlaib did not garner sufficient support in the House.
In a post on X, a platform previously known as Twitter, Greene stated, "Im reintroducing my censure resolution against Terrorist Tlaib. I am removing insurrection and replacing it with illegal occupation on Oct 18th that broke the same federal laws as Jan 6 and led to hundreds of arrest and assault on Cap Police."
Greene's comments refer to a pro-Palestinian rally that Tlaib attended, during which activists occupied a significant portion of the ground floor at the Cannon House Office Building.
In a subsequent post, Greene shared a photograph of the 23 Republicans who voted against the censure of Tlaib. She criticized them for voting "no to censure Pro-terrorists Pro-Hamas Anti-Israel anti-Semitic Rashida Tlaib." Greene expressed hope that these representatives "will use their freedom of speech in congress to censure (condemn) Terrorist Tlaibs speech, lies, and actions that incited an illegal occupation on Oct 18th."
Greene further argued that if these representatives could censure Adam Schiff, they should also be able to vote to censure Tlaib. She stated, "We cannot stand by doing nothing while one of our colleagues calls for the genocide of our great friend and ally Israel. Terrorist Tlaib should be expelled but lets see if we can at least censure her."
In her post, Greene also referenced a statement made by Tlaib on X, which read, "From the river to the sea is an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate. My work and advocacy is always centered in justice and dignity for all people no matter faith or ethnicity." The Anti-Defamation League has interpreted the phrase "from the river to the sea" as a coded message advocating for the eradication of Israel.
Tlaib has previously criticized President Biden for his administration's support of Israel in the conflict, accusing him of "supporting the genocide of the Palestinian people."
The conflict began on October 7th when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in thousands of casualties in both Israel and Gaza. The Israeli Defense Forces have reported that Hamas has taken hundreds of hostages.
In response to Greene's censure efforts, Tlaib issued a statement labeling them as "unhinged" and "deeply Islamophobic." She declared, "I am proud to stand in solidarity with Jewish peace advocates calling for a ceasefire and an end to the violence. I will not be bullied, I will not be dehumanized, and I will not be silenced." Tlaib vowed to continue advocating for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages.
