Illusionist extraordinaire David Copperfield has recently made an audacious claim: he intends to make the moon disappear.
Renowned as the most commercially successful magician in history, Copperfield has a repertoire of mind-boggling tricks under his belt, including the famous vanishing act of the Statue of Liberty. The illusionist unveiled his ambitious plan during an appearance on the TODAY show last Friday.
According to Copperfield, this new stunt has been in the works for an astonishing three decades. "It's taken 30 years of work, that's literally 30 years of our lives to develop it," he revealed. "And there's multiple methods to make it work, and I'm collaborating with Save the Children, an amazing organization, to show the world the difference one person can make."
The illusionist believes that if he can make the moon disappear from the sky, it will serve as a powerful metaphor for the collective effort needed to eradicate poverty, hunger, and danger for children on Earth. "If one person can make the moon disappear from the sky, imagine how together we can make poverty and hunger and danger disappear for our children on earth," Copperfield passionately declared.
Set to take place in February 2024, Copperfield's moon vanishing act is currently in the rehearsal phase, which he claims is progressing smoothly. "In fact, I've been testing them [the 'multiple methods to make it work'] the past few months, and people have reported seeing strange things in the sky at night, all around the country," Copperfield shared with the TODAY hosts. He even encouraged viewers to reach out to him on social media if they witness any peculiar occurrences in the night sky.
As a Guinness World Record holder and a recipient of 21 Emmy Awards, Copperfield is no stranger to pushing the boundaries of illusion. In addition to his grand moon disappearing act, he also revealed plans to give some lucky individuals the opportunity to witness the event firsthand.
"We're going to have a contest for people to actually win a chance to see the moon vanish live and in person, and we'll reveal more about that over the next few months on my social media platforms," Copperfield teased.
