Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., expressed concerns about potential terrorist "sleeper cells" in the United States amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. McCarthy, who endorsed Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., for the speakership position, emphasized the need for prioritizing border security.
He referred to a recent report by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which revealed that 18 individuals on the FBI's terror watch list were apprehended at the southern border in September, bringing the total to over 160 this year.
During an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," McCarthy acknowledged the challenges in the speakership fight, as Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Steve Scalise, R-La., failed to secure enough votes. He highlighted the current chaos at the southern border, stating, "I'm concerned about a cell sitting inside America today."
McCarthy emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that 18 individuals on the FBI terrorist watch list were recently caught crossing the border, with over 160 doing so this year. He also raised the possibility of sleeper cells in the country, particularly in light of uprisings in the Middle East and Europe.
McCarthy criticized the actions of eight House Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who voted with Democrats to shut down one branch of government. He defended his decision to reach a deal with Democrats to delay a government shutdown for 45 days, despite it ultimately costing him the speakership. McCarthy argued that keeping the government open was the right decision, as it prevented a shutdown that would have affected American troops in the Middle East.
Regarding the ethics probe against Gaetz, McCarthy expressed his lack of knowledge about the details but suggested that it must be a serious matter. He called for unity and a focus on solving the nation's problems, rather than playing political games. McCarthy described the situation as embarrassing for the Republican Party and the nation, emphasizing the need for cooperation and problem-solving.
When asked about running for speaker again, McCarthy avoided a direct answer and instead emphasized his commitment to protecting America, securing the border, and addressing inflation. He also stressed the importance of preventing war in Israel and providing the necessary resources for its defense. McCarthy called for a strong stance against Iran, highlighting their increased wealth and support for terrorism worldwide. He urged the administration to confront Iran and ensure the safe return of all American hostages.
While McCarthy declined to endorse former President Donald Trump for the 2024 election, he expressed his expectation that Trump would be the GOP nominee. McCarthy also emphasized his support for Israel, stating that he would have already sent aid to the country and stood up against anti-Semitism.
He criticized the Democrats for their lack of action and pledged to secure the U.S. border to prevent terrorists from entering the country. McCarthy emphasized the need to provide Israel with sophisticated weapons for self-defense.
