Body parts from a person buried approximately 100 years ago were stolen by grave robbers in a shocking incident at a cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, according to local officials.
The Jefferson County Sheriffs Office was alerted to the crime at around 7:20 a.m. on Wednesday when a cemetery worker arrived at the Crown Hill Cemetery and discovered that one of the crypts had been damaged. Upon further inspection, deputies found severe damage to the front of a private mausoleum, as well as to the crypt and casket inside.
Investigators determined that the casket had been pried open and body parts from the deceased individual had been stolen. The Los Angeles Times reported that the person had been buried approximately a century ago.
The damage to the mausoleum is estimated to be around $30,000, according to cemetery officials. The name of the person whose remains were stolen and the family who owned the mausoleum have not been disclosed by authorities, who are currently attempting to contact the deceased's relatives.
Police believe that the grave robbers entered the cemetery under the cover of darkness. A thorough search of the area was conducted by investigators, and the crime scene was meticulously processed for evidence.
As of now, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been named. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is urging anyone with information about the stolen body parts to come forward and contact their tip line at (303) 271-5612.
