An Israeli embassy staff member fell victim to a stabbing incident outside his place of work in China, as confirmed by both Chinese and Israeli officials.
The 50-year-old victim, identified as a relative of an Israeli diplomat, was assaulted as he left the embassy in Beijing.
The Israeli government, in a statement, confirmed the incident, stating, "The employee was transferred to hospital and he is in a stable condition."
Beijing law enforcement has since apprehended a suspect linked to the stabbing, described as a 53-year-old foreign national. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and it is yet to be determined if the assault had any political undertones.
In the wake of the recent terror attacks on Israel led by Hamas, China has remained somewhat neutral. Israeli authorities have expressed dissatisfaction with China's stance, lamenting the lack of "clear and unequivocal condemnation of the terrible massacre committed by the terrorist organization Hamas against innocent civilians and the abduction of dozens of them to Gaza."
The Israeli government further criticized China's response, stating, "The Chinese announcements do not contain any element of Israels right to defend itself and its citizens, a fundamental right of any sovereign country that was attacked in an unprecedented manner and with cruelty that has no place in human society."
In response to Israel's grievances, China maintained its position, reiterating its commitment to peace and de-escalation in the region. "China will continue to work unremittingly for de-escalation of the situation and the resumption of peace talks," asserted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin.
The Israel Defense Forces reported that as of Thursday morning, the death toll included more than 1,300 Israelis, with at least 3,000 others injured.
