In a recent appearance on "The Late Show," Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania expressed his concern about the caliber of individuals representing the American people in Washington, D.C.

The senator's comments came in response to a question from host Stephen Colbert about the potential awkwardness of encountering colleagues he had previously targeted with his well-known meme game.

Fetterman responded, "You all need to know that America is not sending their best and brightest to Washington, D.C." His statement, which was met with laughter from the audience, underscored his disbelief at the individuals making critical decisions for the nation. "Sometimes you literally just cant believe these people are making the decisions that are determining the government here. Its actually scary," he added.

The senator also highlighted the recent near-government shutdown, describing it as "dangerous" and suggesting that there were "less gifted" individuals who would have allowed the government to cease operations.

The conversation between Colbert and Fetterman also touched on the senator's personal health struggles. Earlier this year, Fetterman was hospitalized due to depression and continues to grapple with auditory processing issues that hinder his communication abilities. During the interview, he utilized a tablet to transcribe Colbert's questions.

The pair also discussed the Senate's dress code, a topic that prompted Colbert to present Fetterman with a tuxedo t-shirt. The senator humorously dismissed critics of his casual attire, stating, "oh my God, the world is going to burn because hes going to wear a hoodie on the floor."

Fetterman also addressed serious international issues, expressing his unwavering support for Israel in the wake of recent terrorist attacks by Hamas. He criticized the House for its lack of a speaker, stating, "As a senator, I am always going to stand on the side of Israel and Im going to make sure that whatever is needed, military, intelligence or humanitarian, to vote for that and support that as well, too. Right now, they cant do anything because we dont have a speaker. This is what Im talking about."

When asked about President Biden's recent speech, Fetterman affirmed his belief in the president's commitment to Israel and Ukraine. "I know the president is committed to making sure that we deliver for Israel. But also Ukraine as well, too. We have a pivotal kind of position to be in that we have to stand with both of these kinds of campaigns, to stand for those kinds of people that are fighting against these kinds of awful kinds of enemies," he said.

As the interview concluded, Fetterman gifted Colbert with a black Carhartt hoodie, a nod to his own preferred attire.
