In a heartfelt tribute, U2 paid homage to the victims of a horrific massacre at a music festival in Israel, perpetrated by Hamas terrorists.
The band altered the lyrics of their iconic song "Pride (In the Name of Love)" during a performance on Sunday, dedicating it to the slain attendees of the Supernova festival, whom they referred to as "Stars of David."
As reported by Variety, the music festival, which coincided with the Jewish festival of Sukkot, was brutally attacked by Hamas terrorists. The assailants used rockets, close-range gunfire, and sniper shots, leaving a trail of devastation.
According to the rescue agency Zaka, the death toll had reached over 260 by Monday morning, with several attendees still unaccounted for. The festival, attended by approximately 3,500 people, was held in the desert in southern Israel, a mere three miles from the Gaza Strip border.
Before launching into "Pride," U2's lead singer Bono addressed the audience, acknowledging the tragic events in Israel and Gaza. He said, "In the light of whats happened in Israel and Gaza, a song about non-violence seems somewhat ridiculous, even laughable, but our prayers have always been for peace and for non-violence But our hearts and our anger, you know where thats pointed. So sing with us and [for] those beautiful kids at that music festival.
As the song began, Bono sang the familiar lyrics softly, accompanied by the Edge's acoustic guitar strumming. As the tempo increased, Bono interjected, Sing for our brothers and sisters who they themselves were singing at the Supernova Sukkot festival in Israel. We sing for those. Our people, our kind of people, music people. Playful, experimental people. Our kind of people. We sing for them.
In a poignant alteration, the lyrics referring to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on "April 4" under a "Memphis sky" were changed to honor the victims of the Israeli massacre: Early morning, October 7, the sun is rising in the desert sky. Stars of David, they took your life, but they could not take your pride.
