Parting Gift: Brooklyn School Settles With Former Student (And Rape Victim) Over Failure To Punish Attackers

A civil lawsuit has been filed by a young girl and her family, alleging a "dangerous environment" at the High School of Transit Technology in East New York.

The lawsuit specifically names Marlon Bynum, the school's principal, and Janice Ross, the Brooklyn North district superintendent, claiming that they were aware of the incident and similar occurrences but failed to take any action.

According to the lawsuit, school officials were aware that female students were regularly harassed and subjected to abuse, with sexual activity taking place within the school premises. The suit further alleges that a group of offenders had been allowed to engage in such despicable conduct without facing any effective reprimand or discipline.

The girl's lawyer, Kevin Mosley, also raised concerns that the school had erased surveillance footage of the attack, further complicating the case.

In a report by the Daily Mail, it is revealed that the lawsuit highlights a "climate of harassment" that facilitated the assault, which occurred on October 21, 2021, as the girl was walking to class through an isolated staircase.

The girl, who was either 13 or 14 years old at the time, immediately reported the attack to the authorities. She described how one boy forcefully pushed her head down onto another boy, who then proceeded to perform oral sex, while a third individual recorded the incident and shared it on platforms like TikTok and Snapchat.

The girl's mother claims that the principal dismissed the incident, stating that "kids are kids." This response has only added to the family's frustration and determination to seek justice.

Although two of the boys involved in the assault were swiftly arrested by the NYPD, with one being charged with sexual assault and the other with misdemeanor offensive display, the charges were ultimately dropped by Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, who declined to prosecute them.

The civil suit aims to shed light on the alleged negligence of school officials and seeks justice for the young girl who endured this traumatic experience.
