The purpose of this visit would be to pitch himself as a candidate for House Speaker. The source revealed to Politico that Trump would address the House GOP before their internal speaker election, scheduled for Wednesday.
The recent ousting of Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker, with 216 votes in favor of the motion to vacate, has created an opportunity for new leadership. In response to these events, Trump commented, "A lot of people have been calling me about Speaker." He further added, "All I can say is we'll do whatever's best for the country and for the Republican Party ... We have some great great people."
When asked directly if he would consider taking on the role of speaker, Trump replied, "A lot of people have asked me about it. We're leading by like 50 points for president, so my focus is totally on that. If I can help them during the process, I would do it, but we have some great people in the Republican Party that can do a great job as Speaker."
