In a recent development, Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican presidential candidate, has expressed his support for the GOP members who voted to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his position.
Despite having no prior experience in an elected office, Ramaswamy has voiced his understanding for McCarthy's critics and has backed their intent to introduce "chaos" into the legislature.
Ramaswamy, in a video posted on social media on Tuesday, stated, "The point of removing the House Speaker was to sow chaos. Thats what the critics of Matt Gaetz and everybody else is saying." He further advised those who voted for McCarthy's removal to embrace their decision, saying, "Admit it. There was no better plan of action of whos going to fill that Speaker role. So was the point to sow chaos? Yes, it was."
Ramaswamy also posed a question, challenging the conventional perception of chaos, "But the real question to ask, to get to the bottom of it, is whether chaos is really such a bad thing?"
In a historic vote on Tuesday, eight staunch Republican lawmakers, along with every present House Democrat, voted to oust McCarthy from his leading role. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla, who was the informal leader of the critics, expressed his concerns about the future of the conservative agenda in the house. He stated, "I would say that the conservative agenda was being paralyzed by Speaker McCarthy."
McCarthy, in response, suggested that Gaetz's move was "personal" and possibly a retaliation for an ongoing Ethics Committee investigation into his conduct.
The hardliners' discontent with McCarthy escalated over the weekend when he passed a short-term spending bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR), to prevent a government shutdown and allow lawmakers more time to assemble 12 individual spending bills. Ninety House Republicans voted against the CR on Saturday, arguing that it was a "clean" extension of the previous Democrat-held Congress' policies.
Ramaswamy highlighted several unresolved issues facing the US, including the national debt, border crisis, and lawlessness in cities. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan over a "babysitter" to "shepherd" votes. He said, "For everybody out there who's asking the question, 'What's the plan to get a new speaker?' you're asking the wrong question. What's the plan to actually revive this country?"
