Disney has outdone itself with this latest one.
They have now listed the classic Star Wars character Luke Skywalker as an LGBTQ+ character on their website. This is all surprising news for people who grew up with the series and are familiar with Luke Skywalker as the character at the center of the Star Wars series.
Western Standard reports that Wookieepedia now lists Skywalker as one of the LGBTQ+ characters. That site says that the story Luke on the Bright Side has Skywalker feeling sexual feelings towards another man. Wookieepedia states: There is a story in which he felt romantic feelings towards a guy.
Bounding Into Comics reported it differently by saying: the actual story doesnt appear to show any romantic feelings expressed by Luke Skywalker towards Sergeant Rey Hollis of Alliance Special Forces despite Sam Maggs clear history of pushing her activism into her stories.
However, in a 2016 interview with Variety, JJ Abrams says that Star Wars needs more non-straight characters. Mark Hamill, the actor who played Skywalker, even said to Variety that of course Skywalker is gay.
In his interview with Variety, he stated: They say to me, Could Luke be gay? Id say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer ... If you think Luke is gay, of course, he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.
Emmet Asher-Perrin also wrote in the piece and said the following: If he were suddenly revealed as a gay character in lieu of all that, his sexuality could be perceived by the audience as tragedy.
However, the original Star Trek Captain Kirk, William Shatner, noted in 2021 that Skywalker had a wife and a son in the Star Wars story as it was initially told. Indeed, many feel like saying that Skywalker is a gay character is now just a way of changing up the true nature of who Skywalker is and what he is all about.
This latest move by Disney seems to be yet another activist move by the company to try to force more and more LGBTQ+ characters into their storylines. It is not something that necessarily works naturally with the way that the story of Star Wars is meant to naturally play out, but dont let that get in the way of what Disney wants to do to push its agenda.
