In a recent interview with ProPublica, President Biden expressed his disapproval of a potential third-party presidential run by the "No Labels" group, stating that such a move would be a "mistake" as it would "help the other guy.
" The President was responding to a question by John Harwood regarding former Senator Joe Lieberman's assertion that he was "upholding democracy" by considering a third-party candidacy.
Biden stated, "Well, he has a democratic right to do it. Theres no reason not to do that. Now, its going to help the other guy. And he knows. Thats a political decision hes making that I obviously think is a mistake. But he has a right to do that."
Lieberman, the founding chair of "No Labels," had previously stated in late August that he did not intend to play the role of a "spoiler." He expressed his belief that the American public had lost faith in the two major parties and did not wish to choose between President Trump and President Biden again. "The American people are telling us on polling were doing and discussions were having that theyve lost confidence in the two major parties, and by large numbers they dont want to have to choose again between President Trump and President Biden," Lieberman said.
He further clarified that the group would only initiate a third-party bipartisan ballot "if we think it has a realistic chance to win." "Were not going to be a spoiler," Lieberman added.
When Harwood questioned President Biden about his belief that he was the sole Democrat capable of "protecting democracy" in the 2024 election, Biden responded, "Im not the only Democrat that can protect it. I just happen to be the Democrat who I think is best positioned to see to it that the guy I was worried about taking on democracy is not president."
Lieberman, during the August interview, also stated that if "No Labels" does decide to launch a ticket, it would be bipartisan and would draw "equally from both parties." "If we run it's going to be a bipartisan ticket, so not only will we have concluded that it really can win, but because it's bipartisan were confident its going to take equally from both parties so the idea that were going to spoil it and re-elect President Trump just isnt realistic," Lieberman said.
