A New York man has been sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol and for assaulting a police officer, according to an announcement by the Justice Department.
Jonathan Munafo, who pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting police in April, will also serve an additional three years of probation and pay $2,000 in restitution.
Prosecutors revealed that Munafo was among the rioters who attempted to breach the Capitol building during the insurrection. He engaged in a physical altercation with Capitol Police at one of the tunnel entrances, and later tried to scale one of the building's walls.
Using a flag pole, he smashed windows of offices located outside the building. Additionally, Munafo was accused of assaulting a Capitol Police officer, striking him twice and forcibly taking away his riot shield.
Munafo's identity was brought to light by members of the public, leading to his arrest in Orlando a few months after the riots.
The Justice Department has reported that more than 1,100 individuals have been charged with federal crimes related to the events of January 6. Among these charges, nearly 400 individuals have been accused of assaulting police officers.
To date, over 650 individuals have been sentenced, with approximately two-thirds of them receiving prison terms ranging from three days to 22 years.
