GOP Win: House Blocks This Controversial Bill, Making Dems VERY Angry

On Thursday, the House of Representatives, led by the GOP, voted in favor of a resolution to prevent a bill that would have enabled undocumented immigrants to vote in local elections in Washington, DC, from passing.

On October 2022, the Council of the District of Columbia approved DC Act 24-640, also known as the District of Columbia Council's Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022, permitting non-citizens and undocumented immigrants the right to vote in the nation's capital. The bill was sent to Congress on January 11, 2023.

On February 9, 2023, the Daily Caller reported that the House of Representatives passed a resolution which aims to prohibit the local DC bill from being enacted with a 260-162 vote. This resolution must still pass the Senate, which is led by Democrats, and receive the approval of President Biden for it to take effect.

In January, Rep. Chip Roy and Sen. Ted Cruz proposed a bill that would prevent the Washington D.C. bill from being implemented. As per a Daily Caller report, the legislation would stop any federal money from being utilized to give non-citizens the right to vote in any election and would demand that D.C. prove that it does not permit non-citizens to vote for the application or obtain federal funds.

Cruz informed the Daily Caller that allowing people who are not citizens of the U.S., including aliens unlawfully residing in the country, to vote would not only be in contradiction to the foundations of our Constitution but also would potentially open the door to foreign interference in our elections.

"Voting is a privilege and the tool by which American citizens exercise their say in who leads our country, how we spend our tax dollars, and what policies should be instituted. I am vehemently against unconstitutionally cheapening the votes of American citizens and ignoring the rule of law in this nation, Cruz added.

Steve Scalise, House Majority Leader, has voiced his issues with the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act, saying it takes away the rights of American citizens and could be detrimental to other cities across the US. To make matters worse, the legislation does not even make exceptions for foreign nationals or diplomats, which would allow agents of the Chinese Communist Party to partake in DC elections.

In September of 2022, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a public emergency in response to the migration of illegal immigrants out of Texas, where Governor Greg Abbott had started bussing them to "sanctuary cities." She stated that the city had been turned into a "border town" due to the influx.
