In a shocking daylight incident in New York City, a 71-year-old woman was fatally shot, while another woman sustained injuries, according to the New York Police Department.
The incident occurred in a bustling commercial area on Thursday when an unidentified gunman targeted a man, leading to the tragic death of Enriqueta Rivera and injuring a 34-year-old woman.
The incident took place shortly after 12:30 p.m. near the 500 block of E. 138th Street. Surveillance footage allegedly captured part of the horrifying scene. Responding officers found Rivera on the ground, shot in the back, and another woman nursing a gunshot wound to her arm. The video shows Rivera at a crosswalk, collapsing suddenly. A figure is seen fleeing the scene shortly after.
Both victims were rushed to NYC Health and Hospital/Lincoln. Unfortunately, Rivera succumbed to her injuries, while the other woman is reported to be in stable condition. The NYPD has yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident.
A nurse who witnessed the incident rushed to Rivera's aid. She told FOX 5, "I heard three shots and I ran because I'm a nurse and I gave the lady CPR. I'm sure she didn't make it because she was bleeding internal, and she was shot in the lungs."
The NYPD collected seven shell casings from the scene. Assistant Chief of Patrol Borough Bronx, Benjamin Gurley, stated on Thursday that the victims were likely unintended targets of a gang rivalry.
This incident adds to the growing number of innocent victims caught in the crossfire. In the past three days alone, four people, including an 8-year-old child, have been shot in incidents of misdirected gunfire, according to the police.
Bronx County District Attorney Darcel Clark expressed her frustration and concern at a news conference on Thursday. "This has got to stop," she said. "Enough is enough. This is happening in broad daylight. We need help." The city is grappling with this surge in violence, and the call for action is growing louder.
