Former President Trump, in a recent interview set to air on Thursday, has emphasized the importance of separating President Biden's numerical age from the question of his fitness for the highest office.
Trump made these remarks during an interview on SiriusXM's "The Megyn Kelly Show."
Trump, who is 77 years old and running for President in 2024, is likely to face a rematch against Biden, who is 80, in the general election. Despite his own age, Trump dismissed concerns about Biden's age, stating, "Age is interesting because some people are very sharp, and some people do lose it, but you lose it at 40 and 50, also. But no, he's not too old at all. He's grossly incompetent."
Furthermore, Trump pushed back on polling data that suggests Americans believe Biden, at 80, is too old to be President. He pointed out that he has friends and world leaders who are still sharp well into their 90s. Trump stated, "No, not for the reason of 'old.' I have friends, Bernie Marcus, that are in their nineties and they're sharp as a tack. They're just, I mean, I would say just about what they used to be. No, not old. He's incompetent."
Trump also highlighted the achievements of world leaders in their eighties, such as Churchill, to emphasize that age does not necessarily hinder one's abilities. However, he did criticize Biden's performance, stating, "You know, there's great wisdom if you're not in a position like him. But if you go back 25 years, he wasn't the sharpest tack either."
It is worth noting that Trump has consistently resisted any attempts to label him as too old for the presidency. In a series of posts on his social media platform, Truth Social, he criticized a Wall Street Journal poll for asking whether voters thought his age was a concern. Trump questioned the origins of the poll, calling it "phony and probably rigged."
As the 2024 presidential race looms, the question of age and fitness for office will undoubtedly continue to be a topic of discussion. Trump's remarks serve to challenge the notion that numerical age alone should determine one's ability to lead, while simultaneously criticizing Biden's competency.
