Attorney General Merrick Garland is set to testify before the House Judiciary Committee next week, as allegations of political interference in the federal investigation into President Biden's son continue to swirl.
The hearing, titled "Oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice," will be led by Chairman Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio, and is scheduled for Wednesday, September 20 at 10:00 a.m.
According to the committee's announcement, the hearing aims to examine how the Justice Department, under the leadership of Attorney General Merrick Garland, has become politicized and weaponized. This investigation by the House Judiciary Committee is part of a broader effort to address concerns about the alleged politicization of the Justice Department throughout the Biden administration.
Recently, whistleblowers from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) testified before Congress, claiming that political considerations have influenced prosecutorial decisions in the years-long federal investigation into Hunter Biden. These whistleblowers alleged that David Weiss, the former U.S. attorney for Delaware who led the investigation, had requested special counsel authority and charging authority but was denied by the main Justice Department.
Under mounting pressure, Attorney General Garland appointed Weiss as a special counsel in August. This appointment grants Weiss jurisdiction over the Hunter Biden investigation, as well as any other related issues that may arise. The decision to appoint Weiss as a special counsel came amidst the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Biden.
The upcoming hearing before the House Judiciary Committee will provide an opportunity for lawmakers to delve into these allegations of political interference and examine the actions taken by the Justice Department under Attorney General Garland's leadership.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these allegations will impact the broader political landscape and the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Biden.
