Susanna Gibson, a Democratic candidate for the 57th district of Virginia's House of Delegates, is reportedly embroiled in a scandal involving explicit sexual content streamed online.
Gibson, a nurse and mother of two, allegedly performed sexual acts with her husband in front of a virtual audience, soliciting monetary "tips" in return.
The Washington Post reported that Gibson used the online platform Chaturbate to broadcast these acts. The 40-year-old candidate has over a dozen sexual videos archived on Recurbate, a separate site, as of September 2022. These videos were archived after she announced her candidacy, with additional videos archived as recently as September 30, 2022.
The videos are no longer publicly accessible on Recurbate. The Washington Post, tipped off by a GOP operative, confirmed that it was able to view two videos that were not password-protected. Fox News reported that Gibson violated Chaturbate's terms and conditions by requesting tips for specific sexual acts. In one video, Gibson allegedly suggested that the tips were for a "good cause."
Gibson is also reported to have offered to perform specific acts in a "private room" for viewers who provided her with more "tokens." In one video, Gibson is quoted as saying, "I need, like, more tokens before I let him do that," seemingly referring to acts performed with her husband.
In response to the allegations, Gibson claimed that the incident was an "illegal invasion of my privacy designed to humiliate me and my family." She added, "It wont intimidate me and it wont silence me. My political opponents and their Republican allies have proven theyre willing to commit a sex crime to attack me and my family because theres no line they wont cross to silence women when they speak up."
Daniel P. Watkins, Gibson's attorney, suggested that the dissemination of the videos could potentially violate the state's revenge porn law, a Class 1 misdemeanor. "We are working closely with state and federal law enforcement," Watkins stated.
Gibson's political platform, as indicated by her X account, appears to be primarily motivated by the recent reversal of , which she claims spurred her to challenge the Supreme Court decision.
She is slated to face GOP opponent David Owen in the upcoming election on November 7. The potential impact of this scandal on her campaign remains uncertain.
