A skateboarding event in Hollywood took a violent turn on Saturday evening, resulting in property damage and a vehicle being set ablaze.
The event, known as the Hollywood Skate Jam 2023, began peacefully at around 4:30 pm on the 1600 block of Cherokee Avenue. However, according to KTLA 5, things escalated at approximately 7:22 pm.
Trasher Magazine, a renowned skateboarding publication, had advertised the event, which was organized by F*cking Awesome, Adidas, and Thrasher. Videos captured throughout the day showcased skateboarders showcasing their skills over an old police-styled vehicle, while a concert provided the background music. The headlining band, Dead City, is known for their fiery street shows that draw a large fanbase and occasionally lead to clashes with law enforcement, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
As the event progressed into the night, one video depicted the car engulfed in flames, positioned between two ramps, while skateboarders fearlessly continued to perform tricks. Another video showcased a motorcycle rider executing burnouts with the backdrop of the blazing vehicle.
Law enforcement officers, donning riot gear, swiftly intervened to disperse the unruly crowd, directing them towards Hollywood Boulevard. Some officers reportedly endured injuries from rocks and bottles hurled by the crowd.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed on Sunday that three individuals, whose identities remain undisclosed, were apprehended in connection with the incident. This is not the first time such chaos has unfolded at the Hollywood Skate Jam. Video footage from the 2022 event revealed a similar scene, with a cop car set ablaze while a large crowd observed.
The aftermath of the event raises questions about the security measures in place and the potential need for stricter regulations to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The LAPD is expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, shedding light on the circumstances that led to the violence and property destruction.
