New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been sharply criticized by an MSNBC writer, who likened him to a "Black Trump" following his recent comments on the escalating migrant crisis affecting the city.
The writer, Ja'han Jones, accused Adams of adopting "bigoted thinking" influenced by conservative ideologies.
Jones, a contributor to MSNBC's The ReidOut Blog, stated, "But theres a reason Adams rant is being applauded by conservatives Maybe its because [conservatives] feel theyve made him come around to their bigoted thinking." The ReidOut Blog is the digital counterpart of Joy Reid's primetime program.
In his latest piece, Jones repeatedly censured Adams, a Democrat, for echoing conservative viewpoints and advocating right-wing politics on immigration. He wrote, "That has led some of his critics to label him Black Trump And he lived up to the moniker Thursday with an anti-immigrant diatribe that sounded as if it had been ripped from the former presidents social media feed."
Adams has expressed grave concerns over the migrant crisis, with thousands of undocumented immigrants flooding into New York City. He warned, "We're getting 10,000 migrants a month," and predicted that the crisis "will destroy New York City."
The mayor also forecasted an exacerbation of the city's deficit, leading to cuts in "every service." He cautioned, "It's going to come to your neighborhoods."
Adams attributed part of the problem to the actions of Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who initiated a program to bus migrants from the border to self-proclaimed sanctuary jurisdictions. However, he also acknowledged that the federal government relocates migrants from the border to other parts of the U.S.
Governor Abbott has praised Operation Lone Star for addressing the "dangerous gaps created by the Biden administration's refusal to secure the border." He argued that the busing initiative alleviates the strain on border communities overwhelmed by the massive influx of border-crossings.
On Tuesday, Abbott revealed that his state government has transported over 35,000 migrants to sanctuary cities, including more than 13,300 to New York City since August 2022.
Adams commented on Wednesday, "What happened? It started with a madman down in Texas, decided he wanted to bus people up to New York City." He added, "One hundred ten thousand migrants. We have to feed, clothe, house, educate the children, wash their laundry sheets, give them everything they need, health care. And this team here, we stated, let's do everything possible before we have to push it out into neighborhoods and communities. Month after month, I stood up, and I said, This is going to come to a neighborhood near you."
