In a recent discussion on CNN, political analyst Natasha Alford suggested that the migrant crisis is a "narrative" issue that the Republican Party has capitalized on, a claim that was swiftly countered by CNN's Poppy Harlow.
This conversation unfolded in the wake of New York City Mayor Eric Adams' stark warning that the city could be devastated by the ongoing migrant crisis.
Mayor Adams, a Democrat, criticized President Joe Biden on Wednesday night for neglecting his pleas for assistance. "Im gonna tell you something New Yorkers, never in my life have I had a problem that I didnt see an ending to," Adams expressed, adding, "I dont see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City."
Alford, however, contended that the Republicans have successfully commandeered the immigration issue, while President Biden grapples with that "narrative." She stated, "I think what Republicans have successfully done is to make immigration their issue. And I think what Joe Biden often struggles with is that narrative."
Harlow promptly interjected, "Its not just a narrative!" She pointed out that Mayor Adams has repeatedly urged the Biden administration for more action, funding, and initiatives. Alford responded by emphasizing the need for proactive policy proposals, rather than mere reactions to crises.
She also noted that former President Donald Trump's simplistic 'build a wall' proposal resonated with people because it offered some form of solution. "If you were to ask the average voter how do Democrats approach immigration, Im not sure they could tell you how Democrats approach it," she added.
John Avlon, CNNs senior political analyst, chimed in, stating, "Thats a failure of policy, not just communications."
Mayor Adams has been vocal about the migrant crisis, warning New Yorkers in August that "eventually this is going to come to a neighborhood near you, and it is 91,000 people." He expressed dissatisfaction with Bidens offer of a liaison to help manage the crisis, stating that he has already communicated his needs to the White House.
"We need to allow people to work," Adams said. "Theres nothing more anti-American than you cant work. We need to control the border."
