In the midst of the escalating crisis at the southern border of the United States, a group of Republican lawmakers have proposed a drastic cut to the salary of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, reducing it to a mere $1.
This proposal was introduced as an amendment to the Homeland Security appropriations bill by GOP Representatives Claudia Tenney of New York and Chip Roy of Texas, as revealed in a press release. The release also named several co-sponsors, including Representatives Derrick Van Orden, Jeff Duncan, Russell Fry, Scott DesJarlais, Bill Posey, Carol Miller, Ryan Zinke, Harriet Hageman, Beth Van Duyne, and Nicole Malliotakis.
The amendment stipulates, "None of the funds made available by this Act may be used to pay Secretary Alejandro Nicholas Mayorkas a salary that exceeds $1," as reported by Fox News Digital.
Representative Tenney, in her press release, stated, "Today, I introduced an amendment with Congressman Chip Roy to the Homeland Security Appropriations Bill to invoke the Holman Rule against Secretary Mayorkas for his failure to secure our border and make his salary $1. If the President refuses to fire him for his dereliction of duty, his salary must reflect his failures."
Data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website indicates a significant and consistent increase in the number of encounters at the southwest land border since President Joe Biden assumed office.
Representative Roy, supporting Tenney's initiative, said, "The American people have no obligation to keep paying a federal official who refuses to do his job and uphold his oath, and that's why we should zero out Mayorkas' salary. I'm glad to work with Rep. Tenney in this fight to regain operational control of the border."
Roy has been vocal in his call for a government funding showdown over the border crisis, urging lawmakers to withhold funding for the DHS until measures are taken to secure the border.
In a letter signed by Roy and other lawmakers in August, it was stated, "Simply put, no member of Congress should agree to fund a federal agency at war with his state and people. We have a moral obligation to protect our states, our nation, and, importantly, the migrant children getting abused from the disaster transpiring at our southern border. No border security, no funding."
In response to these allegations, a DHS spokesperson defended Secretary Mayorkas, stating, "While the House Majority has wasted months trying to score points with baseless attacks, Secretary Mayorkas has been doing his job and working to keep Americans safe," as reported by Fox News Digital.
The spokesperson further urged Congress to "work with us to keep our country safe, build on the progress DHS is making, and deliver desperately needed reforms for our broken immigration system that only legislation can fix."
