A shocking incident unfolded in a New York City subway station last week, as a man viciously attacked a 60-year-old woman with her own cane.
Disturbing footage of the incident, captured on video, has since gone viral, raising questions about the lack of intervention from bystanders.
The attack took place at approximately 3:30 am at the West 116 Street and Lenox Avenue station, according to officials from the New York Police Department (NYPD). The video, which lasts for two minutes, shows an unidentified male assaulting the elderly woman with an umbrella. In a desperate attempt to defend herself, the woman fights back with her cane, but the assailant manages to wrestle it away from her as she falls to the ground, screaming in terror.
What follows is a horrifying display of violence, as the man repeatedly strikes the defenseless woman with her own cane, delivering over 50 blows to her body, including her head. The force of the blows is so severe that the cane eventually breaks apart. Even when the woman manages to regain control of what remains of her cane, the attacker resorts to using his fists to pummel her head.
The video also captures the disturbing sight of the man's pants falling down, revealing his bare buttocks. Initially, the audio includes comments from onlookers, but it abruptly cuts out, leaving the viewer with a chilling silence.
According to The New York Post, the assailant fled the scene before law enforcement could arrive. The woman was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital, where she is currently in stable condition. As of now, there have been no reports of an arrest in connection with the case, and the investigation is ongoing, as confirmed by NYPD officials.
