WATCH: CNN's Michael Smerconish Corners Fauci For Answers, Here's His Response...

CNN host Michael Smerconish engaged in a confrontational interview with Dr. Anthony Fauci on Saturday, raising questions about the effectiveness of face masks in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

The discussion was prompted by a recent study conducted by the Cochrane institute, which examined the impact of "physical interventions" in slowing the spread of respiratory viruses.

The study's findings suggested that wearing masks "probably makes little or no difference to the outcome" in terms of flu-like or COVID-like illnesses, as well as laboratory-confirmed cases of flu or COVID-19, when compared to not wearing masks.

Oxford epidemiologist Tom Jefferson, the lead author of the study, emphasized that there is "just no evidence" to support the notion that masks have any significant impact. He criticized policymakers for basing their decisions on nonrandomized and flawed observational studies.

Smerconish confronted Fauci about this study and Jefferson's analysis, citing New York Times columnist Bret Stephens, who described the review as the "most rigorous and comprehensive analysis of scientific studies conducted on the efficacy of masks for reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses."

However, Fauci remained steadfast in his position, refusing to concede ground. He acknowledged the existence of other studies but failed to provide specific examples. Fauci argued that while the data may be less conclusive at the population level, numerous studies demonstrate the advantages of mask-wearing on an individual basis, both in terms of personal protection and preventing the spread of the virus to others.

Critics have raised several concerns regarding Fauci's response. Firstly, he referred to "other studies" without offering any specific references. Secondly, he claimed that these studies demonstrate mask efficacy at an "individual level." However, the nature of mask efficacy studies involves comparing infection rates between groups wearing masks and those without masks, making it impossible to assess outcomes on an individual level.

Furthermore, it is important to note that mask mandates were initially justified based on the premise of protecting others, rather than the individual wearing the mask. People were advised to wear masks, even if they did not personally require them, in order to safeguard vulnerable populations.

Lastly, Fauci's remarks seemed to overlook the fact that not everyone faces the same level of risk from COVID-19. While anyone can contract the virus, the pandemic has highlighted that certain groups, such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, are at a higher risk of severe illness or death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only a small percentage of COVID-19 deaths, just "over 5%," listed COVID-19 as the sole cause of death on the certificate. In cases where COVID-19 was mentioned alongside other conditions, there were, on average, 4.0 additional conditions or causes per death, as reported by the CDC.

Viewers were surprised to witness a CNN host challenging Fauci directly on the efficacy of masks, as such critical questioning is not commonly seen in mainstream media discussions.
