Jimmy Buffett's cause of death has been revealed.
The legendary singer had been battling Merkel Cell Skin Cancer for four years, according to an official obituary posted on his website.
Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare form of skin cancer that occurs when malignant cells form in the skin, as stated by the National Cancer Institute. The obituary also mentioned that Buffett continued to perform during his treatment, with his last show being a surprise appearance in Rhode Island in early July.
On September 1, the "Margaritaville" icon passed away at his home in Sag Harbor, Long Island at the age of 76. According to a statement posted on his website and social media accounts, he died peacefully surrounded by his family, friends, music, and dogs. The statement further expressed that Buffett lived his life like a song until his very last breath and will be deeply missed by many.
Buffett is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane Slagsvol, and their three children, Savannah, Sarah, and Cameron.
