This has been particularly evident in the case of the so-called "smash and grab" robberies, where thieves swiftly invade a business establishment and make off with high-value items. Retailers specializing in technology and jewelry have been the primary victims of these crimes.
The issue is most severe in California, largely due to Proposition 47, a law that downgrades certain felony thefts to misdemeanors. This legislation has fostered an environment where criminals can steal with impunity, secure in the knowledge that they will likely receive a mere ticket if apprehended, or be released shortly after arrest.
However, justice occasionally prevails through unconventional means. A recent incident in El Monte, California, saw a jewelry store owner take matters into his own hands when a man attempted to rob his store.
The incident, which took place at Meza's Jewelry store, was captured on video. The footage shows one man striking the would-be thief with a large wooden rod, while another individual holds the door open. The thief loses his shirt in the ensuing scuffle and is left fleeing down the street, his back visibly marked from the altercation. The store owner gives chase briefly before disengaging.
While the scene may appear comical at first glance, it underscores a more serious issue. Democratic policies are fostering an environment of lawlessness. While this particular incident ended without tragedy, the question remains: what happens when a thief is armed, or when a store owner defends his property with a firearm? The potential for fatal outcomes is high, and many lives have already been lost due to the lack of prosecutorial action.
It is incumbent upon voters to demand better. If they fail to do so, they can only expect the current state of chaos and anarchy to persist.
