Nora Frances Henderson Secondary School in Hamilton is bracing for potential controversy as it welcomes back Kayla Lemieux, a male shop teacher who identifies as a woman, complete with a blonde wig, lipstick, and prosthetic cleavage.
Lemieux is set to return to the classroom next week.
Principal Tom Fisher issued a memo to parents, underscoring the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board's commitment to "uphold individual rights and treat everyone with dignity and respect." Fisher acknowledged the potential for public scrutiny due to Lemieux's "gender expression," which has recently drawn public attention.
Fisher expressed the school's commitment to maintaining open communication with parents in the event of any "disruptions or protests" resulting from external attention. He outlined a plan for managing student conduct upon Lemieux's return, including specific entry and exit procedures and the use of an intercom system for all students and visitors.
Fisher also urged parents to notify the school in advance if they wish to visit to speak with a staff member.
Lemieux has previously stated that a doctor diagnosed him with a rare condition involving "XX chromosomes" and a "hormone sensitivity to estrogen" that led to excessive breast growth. "The diagnosis is based on verbal discussions I have had with my doctor," Lemieux said. "I never requested a note or letter of these findings. I dont have anything I can give you."
Earlier this year, Lemieux was spotted in his neighborhood dressed in men's clothing, a departure from his usual feminine attire. This incident sparked speculation about his sincerity in identifying as a woman.
As the new school year begins on September 5, students at Nora Frances Henderson Secondary School will once again see Lemieux in the classroom. The school's handling of this situation will undoubtedly be closely watched, as it navigates the complexities of individual rights and societal norms in an educational setting.
