MSNBC host Jen Psaki faced a challenge on Wednesday after she claimed that "no one" supports unrestricted abortion.
The topic of abortion took center stage during the GOP presidential primary debate, with candidates debating whether they would support a nationwide ban on abortion. Despite their differences, the candidates agreed that Democrats have a pro-abortion stance. Governor Ron DeSantis reiterated his position that Democrats want to allow abortion up until the moment of birth.
However, Psaki, the former White House press secretary, disputed this claim. She took to social media to assert, "No one supports abortion up until birth." This statement quickly went viral, prompting a significant response and a direct challenge to Psaki. Critics demanded that she provide specific examples of abortion restrictions that she supports if she truly believes that no one supports abortion up until birth.
One common argument made by defenders of Democrats, such as Katie Couric, is that late-term abortions are rare. While this is true, it does not address the concern of pro-life advocates. Their objection is not about the frequency of late-term abortions but rather the fact that elective late-term abortions are allowed in certain states.
Currently, seven states - Alaska, Colorado, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, and Vermont - along with Washington, D.C., have legalized abortion throughout pregnancy.
Furthermore, the majority of Democrats in Congress support the Women's Health Protection Act, which would permit abortion even beyond fetal viability. By refusing to endorse any restrictions on abortion and framing it as a decision between a woman and her doctor, most Democrats effectively endorse a stance of no restrictions at all.
Psaki's claim that "no one supports abortion up until birth" has sparked a crucial debate about the extent of abortion rights and the positions held by Democrats. As the discussion continues, it remains to be seen whether Psaki will provide the specific abortion restrictions she supports or if her claim will be challenged further.
