Conservative commentator Ann Coulter has expressed doubt that former President Donald Trump will secure the GOP's nomination for the 2024 presidential race.
During an online discussion hosted by contributing opinion writer Frank Bruni, Coulter stated, "I don't think Trump will be the nominee, but you'd really do the country a solid if you could get Democrats to stop indicting him," as reported by the New York Times.
Coulter's prediction contradicts current polling data, which shows Trump leading the pack of GOP presidential contenders and seemingly on track to secure the Republican nomination for the third time. When pressed by Bruni to elaborate on her view, Coulter criticized Trump's communication skills, describing him as a "gigantic baby" who can barely speak English.
She attributed Trump's success in the 2016 election to his stance on immigration, particularly his promises to build a wall, deport illegal immigrants, and impose travel restrictions on predominantly Muslim countries. Coulter compared Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to Trump, suggesting that DeSantis is a stronger candidate on immigration issues.
In contrast to her skepticism about Trump's chances of winning the nomination, Coulter offered high praise for DeSantis, stating that he is "head and shoulders above every other GOP presidential candidate (or politician)" when it comes to immigration, crime, and the COVID-19 response. Coulter even suggested that DeSantis outperformed the prime minister of Sweden in handling the pandemic.
However, Coulter expressed concern that if Trump does secure the GOP nomination, he will likely lose the general election. She stated, "If Trump gets the nomination, I say he will lose. I know it, you know it, the American people know it (to paraphrase Bob Dole)." Coulter further criticized Trump's repetitive rhetoric, referring to phrases such as "Shifty Schiff," "perfect phone call," and "we won BIG" as monotonous and uninspiring.
While the first GOP presidential primary debate is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Wednesday night, Trump has chosen not to participate in the event. Instead, he will be featured in an interview conducted by Tucker Carlson, which will be posted on the social media platform X. Reports indicate that the interview has been pre-recorded.
