CNN polling expert Harry Enten urged viewers on Monday to reconsider their belief that Donald Trump is not a formidable candidate for the presidency.
Enten pointed to recent polls that show Trump and President Joe Biden in a statistical tie, with each candidate leading in different surveys. This lack of a clear leader is a concern for Biden, as it is a significant departure from his high single-digit to low double-digit lead at this point in the 2020 election cycle.
Enten directly addressed those who believe that Trump cannot win a rematch against Biden in 2024, stating, "I want you to lose that idea." He emphasized that the race is extremely close and that Trump is currently polling better than he did at any point during the entire 2020 cycle. Enten also dismissed the impact of the four criminal indictments against Trump, noting that they do not seem to be affecting his standing in the polls.
While Election Day is still over a year away, NBC News anchor Chuck Todd provided context for Biden's poor polling by comparing it to Hillary Clinton's numbers in 2016. Todd remarked that Biden's current numbers resemble Clinton's rather than his own successful 2020 campaign.
Trump's competitiveness can be attributed to several factors. Voters overwhelmingly disapprove of Biden's job as president, blaming him for economic troubles and perceiving his use of "Bidenomics" as an attempt to deceive voters. Additionally, concerns about Biden's age and ability to fulfill the demands of the presidency contribute to Trump's strong showing in the polls.
The fact that Biden and Trump are in a statistical tie despite Trump facing four criminal indictments raises an important question, as posed by ABC News anchor Jonathan Karl in June: "What does that say about Biden if he's barely beating [Trump] or, in some polls, actually losing?" Ultimately, it will be up to voters to answer this question and determine the outcome of the 2024 election.
