Morris Brown College, located in Atlanta, has implemented a new mask mandate for students and staff on campus, just one week after classes began.
The private institution announced this requirement in an official communication on Sunday, which was addressed to faculty, staff, and students. The mask mandate is part of a comprehensive set of COVID-19 safety measures that will be in effect for the next two weeks. The decision to reintroduce the mask mandate is based on reports of positive cases among students in the Atlanta University Center, as stated in the communication.
The Atlanta University Center Consortium is a group of historically Black colleges and universities situated on the western side of Atlanta. Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University, all part of the consortium, started their classes last Wednesday.
According to Morehouse's official website, the Atlanta University Center Consortium is currently classified at the green alert level, which indicates a minimal prevalence of the virus within the community. Alert levels are determined based on factors such as the number of recent cases on campus and in the surrounding area over the past seven days.
In addition to the mask mandate, Morris Brown College has also instructed students to maintain physical distancing measures and has prohibited parties and large gatherings on campus for the next two weeks. Temperature checks will be mandatory for students and employees upon arrival at the campus premises.
President James, in his message to the campus community, emphasized the college's commitment to prioritizing safety and called for cooperation in preventing another pandemic. He stated, "We prioritize your safety and seek your cooperation in preventing another pandemic."
