A hit-and-run incident in Midtown on Sunday left seven pedestrians injured after a driver plowed into them and then fled the scene, crashing into two cars in Queens.
When apprehended by police, the 29-year-old driver of the Honda Accord reportedly said, "It's in God's hands," according to police sources. The driver, whose name has not been released, is believed to have been experiencing a mental-health episode at the time and has since been hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation.
The driver was taken into custody and transported to Long Island Jewish Medical Center for treatment. Authorities have confirmed that the driver tested negative for alcohol. The incident occurred when the driver ran a red light at the intersection of West 36th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, striking the pedestrians who were in a crosswalk just before midnight. The driver then continued driving towards the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.
The injured pedestrians were taken to Bellevue Hospital, with one woman initially listed in critical condition and four men aged 24, 27, 28, and 60 also receiving medical attention. As of Monday morning, all victims were reported to be in stable condition. One man, aged 30, refused medical attention at the scene. Another man, aged 32, was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center.
The driver continued her reckless journey and collided with two cars on the Long Island Expressway near the 188th Street exit in Queens. Her vehicle eventually became disabled, leading to her arrest at the scene. Police were able to match her license plate to the Midtown crash. Fortunately, no one was injured in the second crash, and the other drivers involved were able to continue on their way after exchanging information with the police.
