In a recent revelation, it has come to light that the special counsel appointed to investigate Hunter Biden had previously worked closely with his late brother, Beau Biden.
David Weiss, who is leading the investigation, had collaborated with Beau Biden in a case back in 2010, where they successfully convicted an alleged fraudster.
According to the Washington Post, Weiss and Beau Biden, who served as the Delaware Attorney General, worked together on joint investigations and determining jurisdiction in various cases. Tim Mullaney Sr, Beau's chief of staff in the Delaware attorney general's office, stated that their office frequently collaborated with Weiss' office, but he believed their relationship was strictly professional.
Mullaney added, "We are always working hand-in-glove with the federal government; there's nothing unusual about that." The Washington Post also reported that it wouldn't have been uncommon for Weiss to have encountered Joe Biden during their work together. This revelation has raised concerns among many Republicans about Weiss' ability to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into Hunter Biden.
Weiss previously served as the acting U.S. attorney during the Obama/Biden administration and later became the top deputy. In 2018, he was appointed by then-President Donald Trump to investigate Hunter Biden.
In 2022, a group of over 30 Republicans, including Senators Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn, wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, "demanding" that Weiss be appointed as special counsel. The group emphasized the importance of granting Weiss special counsel authorities and protections, given that the investigation involves the President's son. They argued that this would ensure an unbiased investigation, avoid any appearance of impropriety, and provide reassurance to the American people that the Hunter Biden investigation is free from political influence.
Weiss was subsequently announced as special counsel on August 11. However, by then, many GOP politicians had changed their tune after learning about his previous relationship with the Bidens.
Senator Chuck Grassley expressed his concerns about Weiss' appointment, stating, "Despite repeated assurances that US Attorney Weiss had full authority and independence to pursue all the facts, whistleblowers and a botched sweetheart plea deal told a much different story." Grassley further criticized the plea deal negotiated by Weiss, which he believed was underhanded. He called on the special counsel to pursue all the facts and provide greater transparency about the true scope of the investigation, including critical details that were left out of the plea deal.
Former President Donald Trump also voiced skepticism about Weiss' appointment, suggesting that if he was truly independent, he would bring appropriate charges against Hunter Biden.
Hunter Biden currently faces charges in Delaware related to tax evasion and a gun charge. A proposed plea deal, which was described as a "sweetheart deal," fell apart in July when the judge discovered that Hunter's team had sought to prevent him from facing charges related to his overseas business dealings.
As the investigation into Hunter Biden continues, questions surrounding Weiss' ability to conduct an impartial investigation persist. Republicans are calling for transparency and a thorough examination of all the facts to ensure that the investigation remains free from political influence.
