Ohio State wrestler Sammy Sasso is currently in serious condition after being shot during an alleged robbery attempt near campus on Friday night.
According to Sports Illustrated, the incident occurred in the 1300 block of North High Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sasso, an All-American wrestler, was quickly transported to the Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, where he is currently receiving treatment. The Plain Dealer reports that although his injuries are serious, they are not believed to be life-threatening, and he is expected to fully recover and return to wrestling.
In response to the incident, Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith expressed his support for Sasso on Twitter, stating, "Our coaching staff, along with members of the wrestling program and Athletics administrators, are grateful for the caregivers at WMC. We're with you Sammy." Buckeyes wrestling head coach Tom Ryan echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for the medical staff and emphasizing that Sasso's injuries are not life-threatening.
The shooting is currently under investigation, with the Ohio State University Police Department assisting the Columbus Police Department in their ongoing efforts. As of now, no suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Sasso, a fifth-year senior, has had an impressive wrestling career. He is a two-time NCAA runner-up in the 149-pound weight class and has achieved numerous accolades, including being named Big Ten champion twice and qualifying for the NCAA tournament four times. This past season, Sasso had an overall record of 29-4 and went undefeated in the conference as a redshirt senior. He hails from Nazareth, Pennsylvania, where he was a four-time All-American.
As the investigation continues, the Ohio State community and the wrestling program stand in solidarity with Sasso and his family, hoping for a swift recovery and a return to the sport he excels in.
